3 in 10 in favour of legislation on smacking children
Just under three in ten Welsh adults support the National Assembly’s plan to introduce legislation to stop parents in Wales smacking their children.
A recent survey of the Welsh population shows that the great majority of Welsh adults (65%) do not support the National Assembly’s plan to make it illegal for parents to smack their children. Just under three in ten (28%) however said they did support the policy, whilst another 7% of the Welsh population didn’t know.
1,008 adults aged 16 and over across Wales were asked ‘Do you support the National Assembly’s plan to make it illegal for parents in Wales to smack their children?’ during the most recent Beaufort Wales Omnibus Poll, conducted in November 2011.
Younger people were twice as likely as those aged 55 and over to support the proposal to ban parents smacking their children in Wales, with 39% of 16-34 year olds saying they were in favour of a ban, compared with only 19% of those aged 55+. Support was also highest amongst those with children living at home (38% in favour). Even amongst these groups, however, a majority were opposed to the National Assembly’s planned legislation.
Interestingly, there is no difference in the views of people from different socio economic grades on this issue – the great majority of both ABC1s (broadly the middle classes and white collar workers) and C2DEs (the working classes and those not in paid employment) were against the plan to make it illegal for parents in Wales to smack their children.
