Changes in society have led to higher levels of participation in tourism,
recreation and sports activities. Their growth has been accompanied by a greater
need for objective, research-based information. Private and public sector
organisations require such data to help identify consumer needs, to evaluate
existing policies and to develop new ones. Beaufort Research has consistently
provided quality leisure research over a number of years.
A FINE TRACK RECORD
We have carried out a variety of assignments within this area, on behalf of a
number of different clients. Our leisure research experience spans a number of
subjects and techniques, as the following examples show.
Visitor Surveys
Beaufort has undertaken numerous site surveys to obtain information on the
profile, behaviour and attitudes of visitors. Here are some examples:
- Surveys of Visitors to National Museums and Galleries of Wales sites
1996,1998, 2001 and 2002 (for the National Museums and Galleries of Wales)
- Since 2000 surveys of visitors to a series of UK exhibitions for the WTB
- All Wales visitor research focusing on coastal and inland areas for WTB
(2001)
- Visitor research surveys at a wide range of European destinations for the
WTB in 2000, 2001 and 2002
- A three year research programme amongst visitors to national reserve sites
for the Countryside Council for Wales (ongoing)
- Survey of visitors to countryside sites in Wales 1998 (for the National
Trust)

County of Swansea)

International)

period (for the WTB) in 2002
Sports Participation Surveys
Beaufort also undertakes research to measure levels of participation in sport
and allied leisure activities. Our principal client has been the Sports Council
for Wales, the official body responsible for the development and promotion of
sport in Wales.
Beaufort began tracking participation in sport and leisure activities on behalf
of SCW in 1987 and has built up a wealth of trend data on how people
throughout Wales spend their leisure time.
In addition, to this regular tracking we have also undertaken a number of
ad-hoc surveys for SCW, such as:
- Survey of Heads of PE in Welsh Secondary Schools 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996,
1998 and 2000
- PE provision in Welsh schools (primary & secondary), 2000
- Survey of Secondary School Young People's Participation in Sport 1991,
1993, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2001
- Survey of Welsh Primary School Children 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002
We have also assisted in the development of Local Authority leisure
strategies by conducting surveys of the general public and users of specific
facilities in the locality. Clients include Carmarthenshire County Council, Vale
of Glamorgan Council and Rhondda Cynon Taff County Council.
Occupancy Research
Beaufort has a long tradition of undertaking accommodation occupancy surveys
, principally on behalf of the Wales Tourist Board.
- in 1987 Beaufort was commissioned by WTB to set up an inaugural survey
programme to monitor peak season demand among self catering accommodation
providers and attractions in Wales. The programme has been undertaken each
year since then, and it has been refined over time in order to better meet
the needs of the Board and the industry;
- in 1988 Beaufort was commissioned to undertake the WTB Hotel Occupancy
Survey programme, which had hitherto been undertaken in-house. We were
responsible for conducting the survey for the years 1988-1990 inclusive,
establishing research procedures which remain in use now;
- in January 1996 Beaufort was commissioned by the statutory tourist boards
for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to review the adequacy of
existing occupancy surveys undertaken within the UK and to advise on the
development work needed to ensure full compliance with the EU Directive on
Tourism Statistics, issued in November 1995. The research was completed in
May 1996, and its recommendations are being implemented by the UK tourist
boards and the Department of National Heritage.
- in 2002 Beaufort was commissioned to undertake a bedspace survey on behalf
of the South West Wales Tourism Partnership. The survey collects and updates
bedspace information across four unitary authority areas. This information
is used as the basis for economic modeling activity and aims to inform
future marketing initiatives, research projects and trade communications.
