Three in ten favour Labour / Plaid Cymru coalition if no party wins majority in May election

In our latest opinion poll for the Western Mail, adults across Wales were asked what option they would prefer if no party were to win an overall majority in the May 5 election for the National Assembly for Wales.

The most popular choice out of those presented was a coalition between Labour and Plaid Cymru, selected by 30% of Welsh adults (rising to 35% and 34% of those living in the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff and South East Wales).

Just under one in ten (8%) would prefer a coalition between Labour and the Liberal Democrats, while 6% said they’d prefer to see a minority Labour Government doing deals with smaller parties to get the budget and legislation passed.

Another 6% of those interviewed opted for a coalition between the Conservatives and UKIP, and the same proportion would prefer to see a coalition between the Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats, or a coalition between Plaid Cymru, the Lib Dems and the Wales Green Party. A variety of other combinations was also put forward by 6% of adults.

Overall, therefore, four in ten adults in Wales (40%) would prefer to see a Labour coalition in some form if no party wins an overall majority in the National Assembly for Wales election, while just over one in ten (13%) would prefer a coalition between the Welsh Conservatives and another party/ies in this situation.

However, nearly a third of those interviewed (30%) weren’t able to answer the question, with the proportion of ‘don’t knows’ rising to over half of 16-24s (51%). Women were less likely to give an opinion than men (with 35% of women saying ‘don’t’ know’ compared with 26% of men).

In our survey a representative sample of adults aged over 16 across Wales were asked the following question:

On 5 May people will go to the polls to elect all 60 members of the National Assembly for Wales. It will be the fifth election since the Assembly was set up in 1999. No party has won an overall majority in the previous four elections. If no party wins a majority on May 5, which of the following options would you prefer?

… A coalition between Labour and Plaid Cymru;
… A coalition between Labour and the Liberal Democrats;
… A coalition between the Conservatives and UKIP;
… A coalition between the Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats;
… A coalition between Plaid Cymru, the Liberal Democrats and the Wales Green Party;
… Another combination;
… A minority Labour Government doing deals with smaller parties to get the budget and legislation passed.
