Making research happen: a newcomer’s perspective on operations

It turns out that just one email can lead to a seat at the table, or in my case – the MRS Operations Network Steering Group.

I joined Beaufort Research after completing my master’s degree at Cardiff University. I was after a role that was interesting, and I was keen to be a part of something that had an impact on the world. This is my foray into the world of market research, and I have quickly discovered how critical operations management is to the smooth running of research. From stationery supplies to participant coordination, venue booking and managing logistics, my job is a varied one. No day or hour is the same.

One of my earliest projects was supporting our role on The Independent Commission on the Constitutional Future of Wales. I had only been in the job for 6 months, and I was coordinating 128 participants across 8 in person deliberative events in Wales. I enjoyed this immensely, from venue booking to going along to the focus groups themselves, it was great to be involved in something that has advanced discussions on Wales’s constitutional future. It brought attention to questions of Welsh autonomy, identity, and governance, encouraging wider public engagement with constitutional issues.

As I settled into my role, I was encouraged to reach out to the Ops Network at the MRS. Upon emailing them, I realised that the network had gone quiet. After reaching out, I was given the opportunity to join the steering group which I jumped at. It has been great to connect with those involved in operations management at other companies. I have been able to learn about the challenges they are facing, see where we share common ground but also offer up my own experiences as someone new to the industry.

The relaunch of the Ops Network in early 2025 has been a positive way to show that there is energy, commitment, and a genuine need for connection within this part of the industry. Now that the network is up and running again, we are actively thinking about what comes next. Our meetings have direction, and we are always discussing ways to push the network forward. One area the steering group has been looking at is how we can link the various MRS training courses to the Ops Network. The new operations pathway provides a clear developmental pathway for those looking for CPD opportunities.

Being a part of the Ops Network has given me the chance to connect with other professionals across the market research industry and learn first-hand about the challenges they face. Joining the steering group has enabled me to step outside of my role at Beaufort Research, broadened my thinking and see how operations plays out across different companies.

Operations work behind the scenes but being a part of this network has shown me how vital the role truly is. I am excited to keep contributing to the Ops Network and continue to build a more connected community.
